01 / OUR PERSPECTIVE

PRIMA LAB · IWATE PREFECTURAL UNIVERSITY

Curiosity can
change the future

PRIMA LAB bridges AI, computer vision, sensing and XR to address challenges that matter to people. Research begins with simple questions—why does this happen, and what if we could change it? Through discussion, experimentation and prototyping, we turn curiosity into working technologies with potential impact in healthcare, industry, culture and everyday life.

We value careful thinking, experimentation and learning from failure over rushing to a single answer. By listening to people from different disciplines and cultures, we combine our strengths and tackle questions none of us could solve alone. Empathy for the people who will use our work is as important as technical expertise. We aim to be a place of intellectual excitement, generous collaboration and thoughtful discovery.

A new dimension
of seeing

We explore how VR, XR and three-dimensional displays can help people understand spaces and ideas through direct experience. Our work ranges from virtually reconstructing the historic Kunohe Castle to SpheriCul, a spherical display that opens new ways to share visual information. We design interactive experiences that invite people to explore, collaborate and discover, with applications in education, culture and industry.

Research you can explore

Research becomes more compelling when you can interact with it. At PRIMA LAB, we transform ideas into working software so visitors can explore the science behind them firsthand. Inspect the interior of plum fruit through CT imagery, or manipulate a model of a growing tree. Compare views, rotate 3D structures and watch changes unfold to discover how research can address real-world challenges.

Let’s build what
comes next

New ideas emerge when people with different experiences and perspectives work together. PRIMA LAB welcomes conversations with universities, research institutes, companies and communities. We connect AI, sensing, visual computing and XR with real challenges through experiments, prototypes and collaborative development. Whether you have a clear research question or simply a promising idea, we would love to explore what we can create together.
